Majestic Elementary School

Community Council Minutes

Those in attendance:  Shauna Cooney, Melissa Copeland, Karen Eyre, Randy A., Jennie Taylor, Elizabeth P., Karianne Moore, Jenn Votava

Shauna Cooney, our Reading Specialist, presented information about a new phonics program the school is using.  95% group is being used to place students K-6 in intervention groups.  After screeners were given to all students, they were grouped together according to their needs.  Mrs. Cooney said she enjoyed reading with the 6th graders.

The Letrs program is currently being implemented by K-3 teachers throughout the state.  The state is paying for this instructional program and training the teachers, special education staff, and the reading specialists.  Extra reading aides have been hired to help with small group reading.

Mrs. Copeland addressed the Panorama survey which was given to 3rd-6th grade students.  The state legislature ensured that student information would not be shared outside the district.  The parents were invited to review the questionnaire prior to the students participation.  Parents also had the opportunity to opt their student(s) out of taking the survey. The Panorama survey was given to students the previous school year as well.  This data is available upon request.

The purpose of the survey is to help individual schools better support the emotional needs of their students.  It will be taken again in Spring of this year.  A council member asked if we could compare our results with data from other schools.  Melissa will check on this request.  Another question of whether or not this information follows the student as they advance.  This will be explored and reported on at the next meeting.

The council discussed the situation of Covid in the school setting.  We do not have a high rate of outbreak.  We have lower rates when compared to other schools in the district. We promote as much normalcy as we can while respecting parents' choice of their student(s) wearing masks or not.

Melissa expressed appreciation of the community council members participating with school staff to ensure the safety and well being of our students, staff, and community members.  Transparency of information of great importance to the school.

The next meeting will be in March.  The meeting was adjourned.
